I found this posting on my company's internal platform.
The person insists its a good deal, but I think the price is waay too much for a bike with 20K miles on it. Thoughts?
Looking to buy my first bike!
(I spent 6 months on a friend's Yamaha R3, so looking for something slightly more powerful than the 300cc tier.)

It was $6990 new 5 years ago. Seems seller is trying too hard to explain nothing is needed. ~7500 miles on a pilot road 5 tire with plenty tread left. I would be highly suspicious of that. If I were to buy a used 650 class twin again I wouldn't spend over $3500 unless the whole thing had upgraded suspension and brakes. I had an SV650 for 11 years. Ran several sets of pilot roads although never the 5 as it wasn't out when I had mine. Best I did was 8000 miles on a set of Road 3s.
To me at that price might as well get a new bike. JMHO. If buying used I would be looking for a Triumph street triple at that price. Insurance is probably higher though.

20k miles is not high mileage for a modern bike, especially if someone does maintenance.
KBB says $5k for 'Good'. Nada says $5500 avg retail. An unmolested unmodified bike with not-bald tires and a new chain doesn't come by every day.

I would offer 5, settle on 5500 and plan on spending a few hundred on a rear tire.

For reference, I sold my single-owner FZ-07 for less than that asking price. One year old and under 15k miles. I thought everyone got a fair deal on that transaction.
Agree you should plan on buying a new rear tire.
Also account for the valve check that's supposed to be done at 26k miles.

Yeah $5k is as much as I would pay for a FZ-07, anything more you might as well get a new one, unless it has some very good aftermarket goodies on it.
The FZ-07 is a great beginner bike, it's not crazy fast but it moves pretty well and really light. Could use some better braking but it's adequate.

Can I be the old fart for a minute, and point out that this is terrible justification for getting something faster than a 250?
Not that getting something faster than a 250 is a terrible decision or anything, and the FZ's are pretty cool, but that's not really a great mindset for getting a faster bike. It's pretty unlikely that you're really getting everything out of the slower bike after 6 months borrowing somebody else's.

Oh yeah this weekend is Yamaha Demo Ride event at East Bay Motorsports. Should take the MT-07 for a ride if you've never ridden one. They have the MT-03 also. Hop on that R3 and go ride em.

I sold my 2015 with 20k miles for $4100. I had it listed for several months before someone picked it up at that price. Same color as this one, same condition, actual new tires. This guy is out of his mind.

Wow. Awesome , thank you everyone. This is a great forum indeed.
Appreciate the kbb / craiglist / previous sales comparisions.
I tried to negotiate for $5k, but the seller didn't budge. Ok. I wished him GLWS and moving on ....
Also agreed that my skills are still noob level and I certainly haven't outgrown the 250cc tier.
And wow will try to make it out to the demo ride weekend!

The MT-09 is a beast, the engine sounds so sweet too. Tearing up Mt. Fuji in A mode on the CP3 was awesome =P

Good call on skipping for that price. Even $5k is tad much. I sold my 2015 with an Ohlins shock and less miles for much lower that what the seller was asking (this was in 2018)
The MT-07 is a good step up from the 250 class. It's user friendly and won't kill you if you are level headed. Look for a clean low mileage one for $5k or less.
