The Revenant is one of the most unique professions in all of Guild Wars 2. It uses the "mists" to channel the might of ancient heroes which gives power to the Revenant's own abilities. They are versatile, but also widely considered to be one of the trickiest classes to pick up and play proficiently.

The Revenant has multiple unique mechanics that distance it from other professions. Firstly, it uses energy as a currency to fuel its skills, which means that you need to keep track of your energy as well as cooldowns. The second major difference is in the Legends you can channel — they come with their own utility skills — which means that you can't decide what skills to put on your bar; you have to pick the right Legend for the job.

Revenant Strengths And Weaknesses In PvP

Guild Wars 2: Guide To Playing A Revenant In PvP (1)

To start with we'll briefly list the unofficial "roles" that each profession can build for in the PvP modes in Guild Wars 2. They are as follows:

  • Damage
  • Duelist
  • Roamer
  • Support

The Revenant can build around most of these (although they are arguably a lackluster support). The Herald can potentially make a fantastic duelist and the Renegade armed with a short bow is good damage with lots of good crowd control options — but doesn't see much play at the higher levels.

The Revenant is versatile and deadly, but complex and hard to master. The irony is that they have a Legend for any occasion, but they are restricted in choice. Revenants also have less weapon selections than most of the other heavy armor professions (the Warrior and Guardian, respectively). Revenants have access to tons of mobility, lots of high damage bursts, and some interesting support options.

Later on we'll provide a sample PvP build for the Revenant (which will focus on the Vindicator elite specialization) — as of the time of this guide the Herald and Vindicator are both fairly strong PvP options. The Vindicator is the best option for rookies in PvP modes for two reasons:

  1. It's simpler to play than the Herald.
  2. The nature of the Vindicator forces you to develop good habits for PvP modes.

The Vicious Vindicator

Guild Wars 2: Guide To Playing A Revenant In PvP (2)

The Vindicator is the latest Elite Specialization available to the Renegade. It grants you access to the Greatsword - an incredibly hard-hitting power weapon. You also get access to the Legendary Alliance utility skills. In practical terms this means you get an aggressive set of utilities from Archemorus and more supportive abilities from Saint Viktor. You can toggle between these abilities with the F3 key.

The Vindicator's breadth of utility skills and access to tons of high damage abilities make it an excellent damage dealer - but there's a twist. While the Vindicator has some decent sustain options and access to good condition cleanse (thanks to Saint Viktor's utility skills), you will struggle massively against burst damage and conditions can quickly break you down if you're not paying attention.

Professions like a Necromancer can be your worse nightmare or anyone that can reliably hit you with debilitating conditions like weakness can pose a challenge. The Vindicator has to choose their battles carefully, as you only have one dodge to use, and that dodge can do a lot for you depending upon what traits you use.

The Vindicator can throw so many hard hitting abilities out at once that they can overwhelm targets quickly. The trade-off is that they are fragile - misreading a fight can prove costly. To sum up the Vindicator in one line is simple: they are the epitome of high-risk but high-reward.

Positioning is vital to playing a Vindicator well, which is why they are a great choice for rookies to develop this skill.

A Vindicator PvP Build - The Executioner

Guild Wars 2: Guide To Playing A Revenant In PvP (3)

In this section we'll give a rundown of good trait picks for a solid PvP build. We'll be focusing on the Invocation, Devastation and Vindicator trait lines. PvP builds will differ from most PvE builds - you're usually focusing less on damage and more on utility, crowd control/stun breaks, and ways to stay alive.

Invocation

Trait

Effect

Cleansing Channel

Cleanse a condition when you switch Legends. Which is something you'll often do as you run out of energy.

Rapid Flow

Heal yourself and gain swiftness when you use a utility or weapon skill that costs energy (every 5 seconds). The healing isn't much, but swiftness is a good boon to help you move quickly into and out of dangerous fights.

Song of the Mists

Grants a powerful effect whenever you invoke a Legend. You'll get lots of use out of this trait in PvP because constantly switching your active Legends is important to playing any Revenant well.

Devastation

Trait

Effect

Aggressive Agility

Movement skills remove immobilizing conditions. The Vindicator has access to tons of movement skills, and immobilize is the worst conditions to have in PvP.

Notoriety

Might gives an extra boost to power and less to condition damage (Vindicator is all about Power damage). Swapping legends also gives you two stacks of might.

Dance of Death

Whenever you apply vulnerability you get one stack of "Battle scars" this will cause your next attack to steal life. This is your primary passive sustain trait. The Vindicator has tons of ways to inflict Vulnerability on opponents.

Vindicator

Trait

Effect

Leviathan Strength

A ten percent damage boost whenever your endurance (dodge bar) is not full.

Angsiyan's Trust

Grants ten endurance in an area around you whenever you swap legends or activate alliance tactics.

Forerunner of Death

Makes your dodge hit a lot harder, but reduces the area of impact. When you hit with a dodge you get the "Forerunner of Death" effect that grants you 15 percent extra strike damage for 15 seconds.

Weapons, Stats, and Stances

  • The best choice of stats for Vindicator is Berserker's or Marauder's gear. You'll want to use greatsword and double swords as your back-up weapon (this gives you access to a ton of high damage attacks).
  • You'll want to use Sigils like Cleansing or Energy, as you'll regularly be swapping weapons and these sigils will reward you for doing that.
  • You'll want to use the Alliance Stance (Archemorus and Saint Viktor) and then decide between Shiro (who is all about mobility) and Jalis (who is all about stability and survivability)
